ReplyDelete“Glamping” & The Gendering of Outdoor Recreation
ReplyDeleteEverywhere you go there is always a gender stereotype attached to something. When you walk the aisles of a drug store there are products such as his and her vitamins, and his and her shampoos or body washes. But to go to the extent of putting gender specific stereotypes on activities is ridiculous. Just because hundreds of years ago the trend of women staying inside to do the cooking and cleaning while the men went out and did the hunting and labor, does not mean that it applies to present day. Times have drastically changed through the view of women’s progression in society. We have come a long way from staying at home taking care of the kids, cooking a full meal, and cleaning the whole house. Women are out on the go these days doing jobs that men do. It is ridiculous that camping and outdoor bicycle riding are considered manly things. In order for a girl to do something it has to be easier and “fluffier.” Women don’t go camping, they go glamping, where a combination of pastel colors, cute lanterns, teepees, and cupcakes are gathered together for a magical night. Not all women are as fluffy as others. Yes some women may be into glamping, but there are many that are into camping. Just because an activity has a “manly” outlook of it, or you may need to be “tougher” to do it, does not mean it should be considered a masculine recreation. There shouldn’t be a gender stereotype on something as universal as recreational activities.
1. I don’t view camping as a more masculine activity, although I believe more men camp than women do. When I think of camping I think of families or friends having a get together. I don’t view camping as an activity specifically for men.
2. The reasoning for packaging gender specific products in a stereotypic way is to get that gender to buy their product. If a man needed a bottle of shampoo, he’s not going to buy the lavender one with flowers. Instead he would buy the old spice with a car on it.
3. Three quotes they stated that explained some characteristics of glamping was, “You’ll enjoy the outdoors without roughing it”, “hi-tech barbeques replace campfires”, and “tent resorts offer yoga and massage treatments.”
4. Five items that you may see at a store that are pointlessly gendered are baby cards, headphones, kids toys, the pricing of mens vs womens products, and clothing.
Two Questions:
1. Where in your life do you see gender stereotypes?
2. Do you believe in having gender stereotypes on products?
Swim at your own risk: Racial Disparities in Drowning
ReplyDelete1. Yes, I did learn to swim as a child. My parents said I learned how to swim because everyone knew how to swim, and it's a necessity.
2.I mainly swam in private pools. My parents did not want me around other new kids learning how to swim. No racial segregation had nothing to do about it.
3.Since there was discrimination with African Americans, most of them did not get the credited they deserved. Most drowning incidents are African Americans.
4.Some strategy can be offering free swimming lessons. Another one can be having a mandatory swimming lessons at school.
Two questions:
1.What country has the greatest drownings?
2. Could gender be a vital role in drownings?
Where is your summary Meg?
DeleteAnywhere you go you see racial discrimination. This article focuses on racial discrimination with swimming. In 2012, the U.S swimming team added three members of the African American descent out of the 49 total members. The African american descents do not get the credit they deserve in all swimming events. They are overrepresented in the number of drowning victims in the US today. A new statistic came out saying that the drowning rate for american indians/alaska natives was twice the rate for white and the rate for blacks was 1.4 times the rate of whites. The strength of this topic picked up in the 1920s when pools were integrated between the genders. Pools could not both be integrated with gender and race, until later on. Who you are, and what gender you were played a vital role in what you were able to do in life in general. The public had an influence (of course) on the laws of public pools. I personally don’t think that this problem between the racial discrimination has been given enough credit.

ReplyDeleteWhat does it mean to "Get ahead?" in life
ReplyDeleteIn this article it discusses the question of what does it mean to “get ahead?” What I got out of this was that we don’t really get ahead and honestly they don’t even understand what’s the point of getting ahead and what you mean by getting ahead. Getting ahead of what? They just gave a theory on what it even means. They theorize that we get ahead of social assets. A social asset is “anything that allows an individual to lay claim to a particular spot within a social hierarchy.” He gives examples on everyday people get ahead in life but not the way everyone else is thinking. He used parents to kids and professors to students. Ends with the fact that for example a student like I going into college don’t really use social assets. In reality we just are moved up or getting ahead by social assets. But we still don’t get the point of getting ahead, I mean what’s the rush and is there an award for that? So many questions still unanswered but at least we know how they do what they do.
Come up with a list of three forms of social hierarchy that were not discussed in this reading. Explain each one.
We find social hierarchy in our own family tree, starting back in your ancestors and moving all the way forward to the present.
Also in the human body, we are made up of organs and those organs keep us alive and keep us running, Those organs keep us going by also producing cells.
Lastly we find some in the military, kinda going with the power part of it, going from the top of the “food chain” to the bottom
What are some other examples of social assets that people use to distinguish themselves in a particular spot in a social hierarchy? Come up with at least three examples and explain them.
I feel that being in a position in a job makes a social asset because of what your position is. It defines you in the work environment and lets everyone around you know your capabilities.
Your appearance is characterized as a social asset, that’s the first thing people see, You apperance. People judge you and automatically put you in a category.
Lastly social classes are a great example. The upper, middle and lower class also define who you are.
The author of this article makes the point that, “Life isn’t lived in one social hierarchy at at time, but rather each of us lives at the intersection of multiple social hierarchies.” Describe in your own words how this fact could play out in someone’s daily life.
I feel that life is full of different things that come into play. There is numerous things that you are living by, I know that you are going to try and get ahead sometimes it may work or it may end up failing you are never going to know. You may not have numerous ones hit you all at one moment but it may happen. Every single day you are going to get judged.
If student ratings of professors have been shown to have racial and gender biases, do you think colleges and universities should continue to use them? What changes could be made to limit the effects of these biases?\
I feel that everyone is going to have racial or gender biases so that means you aren’t going to please everyone. I mean what would happen if you gave everyone what they wanted, it would be a complete disaster. Colleges are going to run the way that they want to be run, I just think that now people rarely get affected because of someone's gender but more along the lines of racial.
Why do we feel the need to get ahead?
Does everyone have social assets?

ReplyDeleteBun in a New Oven
http://sociologyinfocus.com/2016/02/bun-in-a-new-oven-our-social-bodies-in-the-age-of-uterus-transplants/
Having and carrying a child is a very important milestone in lives of many women. Many mothers would say that carrying their child for nine months makes them have the unbreakable bond with their children. The article, Bun in a New Oven: Our Social Bodies in the Age of Uterus Transplants, it describes a woman’s experience getting a uterus transplants. The woman in the article is given a uterus from a deceased organ donor. After the nine hour surgery she also has to wait a year to get pregnant, via vitro fertilization . After the woman has the baby the uterus is taken out so she doesn’t have to take medication anymore to prevent organ rejection. To be eligible for the transplant you need to be healthy and also need to be in a healthy relationship. Your body has to be able to handle the surgery but your relationship has to also, as it can cause a lot of strain. The medicalization of fertility is changing conditions and behaviors. Vitro fertilization, uterine transplants and other reproductive technology are changing the norms of childbirth. Its makes us rethink the ideas we already have about things that are ‘natural’.
When people were hurt in an accident they could be missing a limb. Now there are many prosthetics that can be put on and this is a new norm in the medical field.
Many people would not be accepting of this procedure. It would be viewed as unnatural and not manly.
The transplants from mothers to daughters are to help a daughter who cannot get pregnant. This seems like a good idea, and would probably stregthen the bond between mother and daughter.
Only people who have the means to get the surgrey can. Poor people would not be able to have a uterus transplant, therefore they could not bear a child.
Why do women want to have this procedure, rather than having a surrogate or adopting?
If you could not have a child, would you go through this procedure?

ReplyDeleteGirls Direct to You! FREE Dipping Sauce!
ReplyDeleteIn Vegas, girls are “for sale” or “for rent”, and are advertised, ordered, and delivered just like pizza. The author describes women being like pizza by saying they’re similar to selling commodities, and it isn’t surprising coupon-like ad of a sexually posed naked woman, or part of her, that covers her with a phone number or price tags. This relates to pizza because pizza coupons have “mouthwatering” images with prices and phone numbers.
1.In my social world, sexual objectification of women is more seen in magazines and on websites. For example, on social media like Instagram and Tumblr, you see people like the Kardashian’s posing, flaunting their parts.
2.I don’t really think there are any advantages to prostitution, but for disadvantages, the prostitutes could get killed, or the people who are paying could get diseases from the prostitutes.
3.This could harm women not in the sex industry because men could look at women as only sex symbols. Men could try to take advantage of women, or cat call them on the streets.
Two Questions:
If the guys interested in the prostitutes knew their past or more about them, would they be more or less interested in them?
If the guys interested in the prostitutes knew who paid them, would they back out?
